On April 6, 2009, an earthquake struck central Italy with its epicentre near the medieval city of L’Aquila. Hundreds lost their lives and thousands were injured or made homeless. Over 3000 historic buildings were damaged. As part of the effort to address these acute losses, Google commissioned us to build a website where people could share written and visual memories of the city – recording its heritage and inspiring its future. The site also invites people to take part in a project to create a 3D virtual reconstruction of the city using Google’s Sketchup software.
